When entering this industry companies make a choice as to what type of company they want to be. They have to decide do they want to make a fast buck by mass marketing low-end systems to as many people as possible and sell their customers to make a profit. The other option is to sell high end security systems, back them up with the best local monitoring available and maintain their customers as their own, which most reputable businesses do. With all this said we feel that there are two kinds of companies in this industry.
A Company that is only concerned with getting a signed contract for monitoring usually offers a basic system for little or no money down. Generally they are leasing the FREE system to you and selling the contract to a third party monitoring center located out of town. As a general rule the least expensive equipment available must be used to try and scratch out a profit. Normally they are only in business for a few years then reopen under a slightly different name. Always check to see which company you are actually signing with and for how long. You may be very surprised to see even some of the larger companies are nothing more than a sales force for someone else. The first clue that you might be dealing with a company like this is to watch for the mention of an authorized dealer program for monitoring.
A security company is concerned with properly protecting your home and will work with you closely to make sure all of your needs and concerns are addressed. The emphasis is always placed on perimeter style systems (door and window contacts) backed up by interior detection devices. Only the best equipment available is recommended not the cheapest. Generally monitoring rates are lower because no leasing is involved. The end result is a better system which you would own and therefor can determine your future. If you do not like the service being provided, the rates being charged or if they sell to someone else, you can cancel the service and go elsewhere.
